Bright, deep red. Introverted nose hints at dark fruits, herbs and underbrush. Quite concentrated and chewy but youthfully reduced and medicinal. There's a creamy richness here but this dense, sweet wine is very closed today and barely hints at the complexity to come. Finishes with building, dusty tannins and excellent rising length. A bit musclebound and in need of at least six years of bottle aging.

Long and savory in the finish, it will continue to blossom for another 20+ years and drink well through its 50th birthday if not longer.

Another clear upgrade in quality is the 2007 Vintner’s Reserve Merlot. This is even stronger than the 2006, which was an upgrade over earlier efforts. Elegant mocha and berry fruit intermixed with some herbs, coffee, and spice make for a delicious, round wine that is actually a blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, all from Sonoma. Drink it over the next 2-4 years.

Dark ruby-colored, it sports a complex perfume of smoke, Asian spices, underbrush, kirsch, and blueberry. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, cinnamon and licorice notes emerge along with plenty of spicy, layered fruit and enough fine-grained tannin to ensure 2-3 years of further development. This savory, pleasure-bent wine will drink well though 2018.

Fresher on the nose than the Napa bottling, offering cassis, bitter chocolate and roasted herbs. Then very ripe and dense but suave, showing good energy and a slightly clenched middle palate. The tannins are serios and granular, but here there's plenty of supporting mid-palate material. This may well merit a highter score three or four years down the road.

The 2006 Insignia is a superb effort in this vintage. Another 30+ year wine, it boasts a dense plum/purple color as well as abundant notes of licorice, black currants, charcoal, black olives, and graphite. Full-bodied, pure, and rich with moderately high tannins, it represents a California version of a Bordeaux from Pauillac or St. Julien.
