The sublime 2010 Pinot Noir is aged for 10 months in oak, of which 44% was new and the remainder used. It has a ripe bouquet of redcurrant, strawberry, and Morello that shows no signs of underripeness... The palate is medium-bodied with ripe fleshy redcurrant and cranberry fruit that is underpinned by extremeley fine tannis. This has wonderful build in the mouth and the finish is exhuberant, almost feisty. This is an audacious Pinot Noir from one of South Africa's top estates. Drink now to-2020.

Delicate wildflowers, chamomile tea, peach, hints of lavender, and tangerine blossoms, and a perfect structure mark this superb, non- grassy wine. One look at the tech sheet get wine structuralists excited: the fruit was harvested at 21.1 Brix (!), the alcohol is only 12.4%, and it was aged only in stainless steel. Annual winner, and it will improve in the bottle- though I defy anyone to wait!

"...amazing aroma is more of huckleberries and loganberries and actually smells tart! There is also a light hit of American oak (coconut?)and the entry is a revelation with a sour-cherry entry and a crispness on the tongue that seems to call for the same sort of foods a Chianti would enhance: tomato-based meats. And who says a great Zifandel needs massive alcohol? The wine is 13.8% (!) It takes courage to make wine like this. John Williams and Paula Moschetti are to be commended for their continuing quest for balance and food-friendly wines!"

Chuck Wagner likes his wines full bodied and loaded with fruit, and that's exactly what you'll find in his premium Cabernet. Caymus Special Selection Cab remains a Napa Valley icon for good reason. Plush cassis and black raspberry notes jump out of the glass and are layered with spice cake, vanilla, licorice and chocolate. Concentrated flavours of plump, juicy dark berries, baking spice and sarsaparilla linger long after you swallow. It's an exceedingly satisfying and supple wine with sweet ripe tannins. This is an impressive special occasion or gift wine.

"...red fruits, dried flowers are some of the many notes that take shape in this deep, complex, powerful wine. I imagine the 2009 will still be spectacular at age 30... Huge veins of minerality support the huge fruit, giving the wine much of its pure tension and vitality. This is going to be a fascinating wine to follow over the coming decades... The Howell Mountain Cabernet is classic Dunn, with maybe just a little more polish than some other recent vintages. As always, the Dunn Cabernets stand apart from the vast majority of wines being made in Napa Valley for their huge, tannic structures and aging potential, something that is especially true for the flagship Howell Mountain bottling.

The 2009 Cepparello is gorgeous. It brings together the radiance and ripeness of a warmer year with the medium-bodied structure of a cooler vintage. Today the 2009 is a bit retient and appears headed for a period of dormancy. From time to time hints of its ultimate potential come through in attractive layers of dark red fruit. The rich, textured finish bodes well for the future. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2034.

The wine known simply as Leonetti 2009 Reserve is, in fact 92% Cabernet Sauvignon (the rest Merlot)... 2009 Reserve comes off as significantly fuller-bodied... Ripe, lightly-confitured cassis and mulberry are mingled with toasted nuts... High-toned suggestions of camphor, mint emerge with aeration. The ampitude and sheer fruit intensity here comes along with a palpable if well-coated tannic undergirding; and the finish splendidly soothes and sustains. The longer this was open to the air, the greater its appeal; and i'm only sorry I could not follow it for a second day. Look for at least 15 years of profound pleasure. Drink 2012-2027.

"One of the Perrins worldwide successes has been their least expensive wine, now in
screw cap, La Vieille Ferme. Basically, this is an under-$10 wine in both white and red
that is exceptionally well-made, and the ideal inexpensive introduction to the viticulture of
southern France. The 2011 La Vieille Ferme white comes from the Côtes du Luberon
and is an interesting blend of Vermentino, Ugni Blanc and Grenache Blanc, completely
naked, fresh and light to medium-bodied, with crisp grapefruit and citrus notes, as pure as
a high alpine water source. It is meant to be drunk in its first 12 months of release while
waiting for the next vintage, so don’t make the mistake of aging this wine. The 2011 La
Vieille Ferme red is usually about 50% Grenache and the rest Syrah, Carignan and
Cinsault. Considering they make 4 million bottles, the consistency is remarkable. The
wine exhibits a deep color and loads of berry fruit as well as hints of Provencal herbs and
spice. This is another delicious, fruit-forward wine that the world needs and gets from the
Perrins. Drink it in the first several years of its life." Robert Parker

This is another fine Chardonnnay from Talley, a great Central Coast producer. This is the second label, and for the price, you'll get a terrific Chardonnay that's creamy and rich in oranges, kiwi fruits and golden mangoes, but bright in acidity.

Right off the bat, this Pinot impresses for sheer depth of fruity flavor. It's rich and showy with plums and cherries, spicy notes of tobacco and pine, and toasty, new oak. The tannin-acid structure is impeccably balanced. Delicious to drink now, but should also mature beautifully. A majority of the grapes come from the winery's Wayfarere Vineyard, in the new Fort Ross Seaview appellation. -S.H.
